Abigail Hess, The Depth of Prayer, charcoal, 2023, 48" 48" inches
Artist Statement
The fear of failing to get an idea across correctly, it frightens me. Realism is the concept I resort to; it never fails. It is an illusion that fools the human eye in seeing the truth. Everything I create is an attempt to get that idea across. This work was created with the message of prayer; it is something that many people look over, but true prayer is a deep emotion, a romantic connection, it produces a sense of humility, and it is a conversation with one’s Creator. Charcoal was the best choice for this piece because not only do I have more experience with it, but it becomes very easy for things to take form. The size of the paper was very important and beneficial to the impact of this drawing; if smaller, the meaning, the details, nothing would be significant. Each area of the drawing has been intricately looked over with a concluded time of twelve hours. Moving from one inch to another, I perfected each step and then looked at the entire picture. The connection I have with this drawing is deeper than the shadows of compressed charcoal. This drawing not only represents the idea or action of prayer itself, but the man behind the reference as well. The man is a devoted believer who kneels, cries, and dances in prayer. He was a perfect reference for this drawing, not only for the way he lives and prays, but he believes that prayer has a deep meaning. The Depth of Prayer is this man.
